Shane Devon Tamura, a 27 year old man from Las Vegas, carried out a deadly shooting in Midtown Manhattan on the evening of July 28, 2025. The attack occurred on the 44th floor of an office building at 345 Park Avenue, a location known for housing major financial firms, including Blackstone and the National Football League.
Tamura opened fire with an AR-15 style rifle, killing four people, including a New York City police officer and injuring others before he took his own life.
The incident began around 6:30 p.m. local time. Tamura parked his BMW outside the building and entered the lobby. He shot a police officer and a woman who was hiding behind a pillar. He then continued shooting in the lobby, wounding a man and shooting a security guard near the elevators.
Tamura allowed a woman inside the elevator to leave unharmed before heading to the 33rd floor, where he continued to fire. According to the police, he barricaded himself in an office area and then fatally shot himself while walking down a hallway. The shooting caused a large emergency response from police, firefighters and the FBI.
Among the victims was Didarul Islam, a former refugee from Bangladesh and an off-duty officer working as a security guard. He was critically injured and died during surgery. Four people were killed in total, excluding Tamura himself.
Authorities revealed that Shane Tamura had a concealed carry permit for a handgun issued in June 2022, valid for five years. He also had an expired private investigator license. At the time of the shooting, people found a rifle case, rounds of ammunition, a loaded revolver and prescription medications in his car.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues confirmed by law enforcement in Las Vegas. Reports also indicated Tamura had worked as a security guard at a casino in Las Vegas before relocating to New York.
No clear motive for the shooting has been disclosed. Police stated Tamura acted alone and preliminary investigations have not uncovered any additional information regarding potential cases or accomplices. Officials continue to examine the events leading up to the shooting and Tamura’s background.
Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD leadership responded swiftly, holding press conferences to address the tragedy. The city mourned the loss of life. especially the brave police officer who died protecting others. The shooting has reignited ongoing discussions about gun control and mental health support.
